Liposuction, sometimes shortened to “lipo,” is a surgical procedure that uses suction to remove excess fat cells, thus reshaping and recontouring targeted body areas. Candidates should be in good general health and absent any physical conditions that could lead to surgical complications. For example, patients with coronary artery disease or a weakened immune system may be disqualified from receiving this procedure. Non-smokers are greatly preferred, as are people with firm, elastic skin. It is essential for patients to remember that this procedure is meant for body contouring and is not an obesity treatment. You need to be within 30 percent of your healthy body weight to be an ideal candidate. In this common liposuction technique, the area to be treated is injected with large volumes of dilutes anesthesia, making general anesthesia unnecessary.

In power-assisted liposuction the tip of the suction tube is made to vibrate at a rapid speed. This loosens the fat cells so they can be easily suctioned away.

Ultrasonically-assisted lipoplasty can be used in conjunction with lipo techniques such as tumescent to product superior results in the right patient.

Smartlipo uses a technology called ‘laser lipolysis’ to destroy fat cells. It is less invasive and usually has faster recovery times.

Facial Liposuction uses a special tube called a cannula. The cannula is inserted through a tiny incision placed in an inconspicuous location on the face or neck. Using a suction syringe or pump attached to the cannula, the fat cells are extracted. The result is a resculpting of bulging areas into more attractive and more youthful facial contours.

Justin Perez, MD is a UT Southwestern Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Graduate. He completed his medical training at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City, where he graduated with honors. He subsequently completed a rigorous plastic surgery residency at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX – ranked the #1 plastic surgery training program in the country.
